Estes Park, Colorado
Over Labor Day weekend in 2023, my mom and I went backpacking in Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park, Colorado. The day had been wet and gray, but as we reached a mountaintop the storm clouds broke for just a minute, and late light poured across the valley below Sundance Mountain and the changing leaves. I had time for a few frames before the clouds closed in again.
Golden meadows, dark forest and a moody sky give this Rocky Mountain National Park jigsaw puzzle plenty of distinct sections to sort.

About the area
Rocky Mountain National Park covers about 415 square miles of Colorado's Front Range, and Trail Ridge Road climbs past 12,000 feet as it crosses it. Sundance Mountain rises above the alpine tundra along that road. Every September the park's aspens turn gold and elk gather in the meadows for the fall rut.
The hills around where this photo was taken, traced line by line. Each thin line marks 50 m of elevation.
