The Black Hills, South Dakota
This is the view from the top of Black Elk Peak, the highest point in South Dakota, in May 2026. I made Roxie do a lot more climbing than she’d signed up for, mostly because I unintentionally took us off the trail. From the summit, ponderosa pines rolled out like a sea in every direction.
Forest canopy fills most of the frame, making this Black Hills jigsaw puzzle one for patient builders.

About the area
At about 7,240 feet, Black Elk Peak is the highest point in South Dakota and the highest summit in the US east of the Rockies. A stone fire lookout tower sits on top. From there the ponderosa pine forest rolls out in every direction, the dark forest that gave the Black Hills their name.
The hills around where this photo was taken, traced line by line. Each thin line marks 25 m of elevation.
