The Acropolis, Athens
After Crete, we took the overnight ferry to Athens and stepped off the boat at 4 a.m. in June 2025. We dropped our bags in storage and hurried up to the Acropolis to be there the moment it opened, and caught the Erechtheion in its first light, the marble porches glowing before the crowds arrived.
Columns and stonework are distinct to build, while the soft morning sky takes a little longer in this Athens jigsaw puzzle.

About the area
The Erechtheion stands on the north side of the Acropolis and was built between about 421 and 406 BC. It's best known for the Porch of the Caryatids, six sculpted maidens holding up the roof. The ones on site today are replicas; the originals are protected in museums.
The hills around where this photo was taken, traced line by line. Each thin line marks 50 m of elevation.
